Seduce the Medici at an opulent Renaissance carnival; deploy members of your noble house to the streets of Florence; compete for control at different parties; meet the Medici when they arrive; then gift, brag and scandalize your way to victory!
Set in the titular city, Florence sets tasks players with elevating the status of their family, navigating the city on the night of a grand carnival to set up meetings with the ruling Medici figureheads: Cosimo, Giovanni, and Contessina.
Florence is a Euro-style area control game, where the regions you want to hold change each round, as the Medici move around the city attending various functions. Over 9 rounds, each player dispatches family members to attend parties, giving gifts, bragging about their achievements, engaging in spurious gossip, and muscling their way through crowds to get some valuable face-time with the Medici.
By ensuring your family is at the front of each queue, and the most talked about (by meeting conditions of various ‘brag’ cards), you gain valuable points to elevate your family’s status. Each Medici is only impressed by a specific approach, and as the night goes on, they become harder to impress – scoring you more points for increasingly harder objectives. Rather than coin or limited turns, the chief resource in Florence is time: as the carnevale moves into full swing and the streets fill with revelers, it will only become harder to navigate, and you will need to be cautious of which actions you ask your various scions to complete.
With tight, thematic gameplay and a wealth of available strategies, Florence is a fitting finale to Braincrack Games’ trio of Mediterranean eurogames (started by Ragusa and Venice.)
